You don't need a longer drive to break 100 or 90 — you need to stop turning three shots around the green into five. Here are the specific skills that actually move your score, and how to practise them.

Learn one dependable, low-risk chip and you'll rescue par after par. The setup: a narrow stance, feet close together, weight favouring your lead foot (about 60/40), hands slightly ahead of the ball, and a putting-style stroke using the shoulders rather than the wrists. Use a mid-iron — a 7- or 8-iron — rather than a lofted wedge for standard chips. The goal is not to fly the ball to the flag; it's to land it just onto the green and let it release and roll like a putt. This 'bump-and-run' takes the fluffed, chunked and bladed disasters out of play because there's so little that can go wrong. Master this one shot before anything fancier.

One reliable pitch

When you need height and a soft landing — to carry a bunker, a slope or thick fringe — you need a pitch. Take a lofted wedge (sand or gap wedge), open the clubface slightly, play the ball in the middle of a slightly wider stance, and make a smooth, accelerating swing through the ball. The single biggest mistake amateurs make is decelerating into impact out of fear — that's what fluffs and chunks the shot. Commit to the swing and accelerate through. Learn one pitch length well before you try to control multiple distances.

A sane plan for bunkers

Greenside bunkers terrify beginners, but the fix is a mindset shift: your only job is to get out in one shot. Distance and touch come much later. The technique: open the clubface (so the club uses its bounce), dig your feet in for stability, aim to hit the sand about two inches behind the ball, and — crucially — keep swinging through to a full finish. You never actually strike the ball; the sand throws it out. Take a bigger swing than feels natural, because the sand kills the clubhead speed. Escape first, get close second.

The 50-yard shot nobody practises

The awkward half-wedge from 40–60 yards — too far for a chip, too short for a full swing — is where amateurs leak easy shots. The trick is to control it with the length of your backswing, not by decelerating a full swing. Think of your lead arm as a clock: a swing to 'nine o'clock' produces one reliable distance, 'ten o'clock' a bit more. Groove two or three of these and you'll have a genuine answer to the shot that used to score you a double.

Think in land spots, not targets

The single mental shift that transforms chipping is to stop aiming at the hole and start picking a landing spot. Every chip is really two questions: where do I want the ball to touch down, and how far will it roll from there? A low chip with a 7-iron might land two feet onto the green and roll fifteen feet; a lofted pitch might land ten feet from the flag and stop dead. Pick the shot that lands the ball on the green — the most predictable surface — as soon as safely possible, then let it release like a putt. Practise picking a spot, landing the ball on it, and learning the roll for each club. It turns chipping from a gamble into arithmetic.

Club selection around the green

You don't have to chip with a wedge just because it's the 'short-game club'. The rule of thumb: the more green you have between you and the hole, the less loft you want, because a lower-lofted club lands sooner and rolls out like a putt — much easier to control than a high, spinning flop. From just off the fringe with lots of green ahead, a 7- or 8-iron bump-and-run is the percentage play. Save the lofted sand or lob wedge for when you must carry something — a bunker, thick rough, or a slope — between you and a tight pin. Match the club to the shot the situation demands, not to habit.

Where to spend your practice time

Flip the usual routine. Most golfers bash drivers for an hour and never touch the chipping green — do the opposite, roughly two parts short game to one part full swing. A great 30-minute practice split: ten minutes chipping to a tee or towel target, ten minutes of pitches over an obstacle to a green, five bunker escapes, and five minutes on those half-wedges. That half hour will do more for your scorecard than a whole bucket of drives. Pair a sharper short game with better green-reading and putting and smarter course management, and you'll watch your handicap fall faster than you thought possible.
